AFCI Electrical Safety - Hints For Homeowners - NAPS TV

SAFETY-CONSCIOUS HOMEOWNERS EQUIP THEIR HOMES WITH SMOKE ALARMS AND ESCAPE LADDERS SO THEY ARE PREPARED IN CASE THEREʼS A FIRE, YET MANY ARE UNAWARE THAT INSTALLING ANOTHER DEVICE COULD ACTUALLY PREVENT FIRES FROM HAPPENING.

ARC FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTERS, OR AFCIs, ARE DEVICES THAT REPLACE STANDARD CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN AN ELECTRICAL SERVICE PANEL. THEY ARE DESIGNED TO DETECT HAZARDOUS ARCING CONDITIONS AND SHUT DOWN THE ELECTRICITY BEFORE A FIRE CAN START. AN ARC FAULT IS A DANGEROUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEM CAUSED BY DAMAGED, OVERHEATED OR STRESSED ELECTRICAL WIRING. IT IS ONE OF THE MAJOR CAUSES OF THE FIFTY-ONE THOUSAND HOME ELECTRICAL FIRES IN THE U-S EACH YEAR.

THE U-S CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION ESTIMATES THAT INSTALLATION OF AFCIs COULD PREVENT MORE THAN FIFTY PERCENT OF HOME ELECTRICAL FIRES. THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE NOW INCLUDES EXPANDED REQUIREMENTS FOR AFCI PROTECTION IN ALL NEW HOMES. MANY EXPERTS BELIEVE THAT OLDER HOMES WITH AGING WIRING SYSTEMS CAN ALSO BENEFIT FROM THE ADDED PROTECTION THESE DEVICES OFFER.
